The results revealed that taking probiotics regularly can help healthy people become even healthier.

It is now indisputable that a healthy microbiome is critical for good health. Many studies have reported that probiotic supplements are beneficial in the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders such as colitis, diarrhea, Crohn’s disease and IBS. Also, an increasing number of scientific studies are reporting that probiotic supplementation can provide benefits for conditions outside the GI tract such as oral health, respiratory infections, eczema, bladder and vaginal infections, and psychiatric disorders like anxiety, depression and schizophrenia.,, However, there has been some controversy about whether probiotic supplementation in “healthy adults” is helpful or hype.

In a study titled A review of probiotic supplementation in healthy adults: helpful or hype? the authors reviewed 45 clinical trials on the use of probiotics in healthy adults published between 1990 and 2017. The authors reported that the studies reviewed could be classified into 5 major areas of benefit. The studies reviewed addressed the following areas of concern: changes in the microbiome (15 studies), immune system response (16 studies), blood lipids and/or lowering of cardiovascular risks (14 studies), gastrointestinal discomfort (11 studies) and female reproductive health (4 studies).

The overall results indicated that probiotic supplementation in healthy adults can lead to a short-term increase in the concentration of the strains of bacteria supplied in the probiotic supplements. The evidence also indicated that probiotics can be helpful in improving immune system responses, stool consistency, bowel movement, and vaginal lactobacilli concentration. There was insufficient evidence to support the role of probiotics to improve blood lipid profiles.

In their conclusion, the authors stated that the results of studies on the use of probiotics in healthy adults over the past 27 years indicate that probiotic consumption can provide beneficial improvements in the immune, gastrointestinal, and female reproductive health systems in healthy adults.

My Analysis and Comments: There are two important points that I want to address related to this study and its reported results.

1) Health is a continuum: Remember, health is not simply the absence of disease. In most people, even healthy people, there is generally room for improvement in one or several areas of health. In this review of studies on the use of probiotics in healthy individuals, it was shown that probiotic supplementation can result in improvements in GI health, immune system function and female reproductive system. So, probiotics can make healthy people healthier

2) Probiotic Benefits are Short-Lived: It was interesting and important to note that the benefits healthy people gained from taking probiotics were transient or of short duration. This is because the strains of bacteria in probiotic supplements are generally not the same strains that individuals harbor in their innate microbiome. The bacteria in probiotic supplements can provide health benefits for individuals for approximately 7-10 days as they are passing through the intestinal tract. Because the strains of bacteria in probiotic supplements are generally not the same as the individual’s innate bacteria, the supplemented strains do not effectively adhere to the intestinal mucosal cells and colonize. In fact, in a study titled Beneficial Properties of Probiotics, the authors stated the following:

“Continuous intake of orally administered probiotics is necessary because permanent colonization of probiotics is uncommon.”

Conclusion: Probiotic supplementation can provide benefits to Individuals with health problems AND to healthy adults. However, the benefits from probiotic supplementation are generally believed to be of short duration because the ingested bacteria are not the host’s innate bacteria. This means the bacteria in probiotic supplements are not likely to colonize and remain resident for extended periods of time.

Therefore, the bottom line is that yes, probiotic supplements can provide health benefits, but they must be ingested continually in order to continue receiving their health-promoting benefits.

Dr. Peter Langsjoen is a cardiologist that I met about a decade ago and I have followed his work very closely ever since. A number of years ago, he selected 109 of his patients with hypertension and added coenzyme Q10 to their existing medications. The average dose used was 225 mg/day. In most of these patients, the average time from the initial of diagnosis of high blood pressure was 9.2 years. Many patients were taking 2 or 3 blood pressure-lowering medications to keep their blood pressure within acceptable ranges.

How effective was coenzyme Q10? Within the first 6 months, 51% of the patients were able to discontinue from 1 to 3 blood pressure medications, with an average time of 4.4 months.

As a pharmacist, I have to be cautious about recommending CoQ10 to patients who are taking blood pressure medications. I emphasize that they must communicate with their physician because coenzyme Q10 is so effective, they will need to reduce the dose of their medications and/or discontinue them at some point. It is illegal for me to advise people about changing the dose of their medications. That must be done by a physician. However, I feel my passion is to educate people about natural therapies so I share this study and encourage them to discuss it with their doctor.

Every household should have DMSO on hand. DMSO, which is available as a liquid or in a rub-on gel, is a miracle treatment for all kinds injuries. Trainers of most athletic teams are aware of DMSO's ability to rapidly heal sports injuries and I've been using it personally for over 30 years. I introduced DMSO to the owner/coach of my CrossFit gym a couple of years ago and he immediately began using it on athletes with minor aches and pains. My blog gives me the opportunity to publicize the many benefits of DMSO to a much wider audience. So, here is the DMSO story.


DMSO stands for dimethylsulfoxide. It is a cheap byproduct of the wood-pulp/paper industry that has been used for decades as an industrial solvent, paint thinner and as additive in various other chemical products. In the 1960s Stanley Jacob, MD was using DMSO to supercool animal organs for transplant experiments at Oregon Health Sciences University (when mixed 50/50 with water, it resists freezing at very low temperatures). Jacob knew that DMSO could preserve organs without damaging the cells and tissues. After a laboratory accident, Dr. Jacob applied DMSO to the burned skin of his lab assistant are witnessed a remarkably fast healing. This was the beginning of Dr. Jacob's career as the "father" of DMSO. To date, over 11,000 articles have been written on the medical, clinical and therapeutic properties of DMSO. Dr. Jacob passed away on Jan. 17, 2015 at the age of 91. He remained at the forefront of DMSO research right up until the time of his death.


Fast Relief From Pain And Inflammation
When DMSO is applied to the skin, it gets quickly absorbed into the tissues. During inflammation, the inflamed tissues fill with water. This creates pain from the additional pressure which leads to more inflammation and additional injury. DMSO draws water out of inflamed tissues and reduces swelling very quickly. DMSO also acts as an antioxidant which helps it prevent free radical damage in injured tissues. Many people with arthritis also get great relief from DMSO. When DMSO is used on sensitive skin or on open wounds, it is best to apply a weaker solution by diluting it with distilled water.


Sports Injuries
It is amazing how quickly DMSO speeds up the healing process for soft tissue sports injuries ranging from sprains, strains, tendinitis, etc. It also dissolves and removes blood from damaged tissues which results in rapid healing from bruises. I estimate that the purple discoloration from a bruise clears up about 4 to 5 times faster when DMSO is applied to the wound 3 or 4 times daily.


Prevents Scarring
DMSO dramatically increases circulation to any area that it is applied to. Thus, application of DMSO results in a substantial increase in the delivery of blood, oxygen and nutrients to injured tissues. When applied to a surgical incision or other types of wounds such as the road rash from a bike or motorcycle accident, DMSO will accelerate the healing and prevent or substantially reduce scarring. Generally a 50% or 70% DMSO/water mixture is applied once the wound has closed. In addition to the types of wounds I've mentioned, DMSO is also a miracle treatment for burns.


Helping Wounded Soldiers
I spoke personally with Dr. Jacob about 4 years ago. In his late 80s, Jacob was still highly energetic and excited about his work. During our conversation, he told me about the multi-center trial he organized to administer intravenous DMSO to soldiers who had closed head trauma injuries. These are very severe head injuries that frequently result from IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices otherwise knows as roadside bombs). The swelling/pressure from these injuries cause brain damage. Jacob told me that when DMSO is administered intravenously after a head injury, the swelling is reduced within five minutes. DMSO's ability to reduce swelling dramatically reduces brain damage if administered shortly after the time of injury. No other therapy comes close to acting this quickly.


Things To Know About DMSO
1) It is a universal solvent. A large part of the uniqueness of DMSO is due to the fact that structurally it is a bipolar molecule; one end of the molecule is water-loving and the other end of the molecule is fat-loving. This makes DMSO a universal solvent. Consequently, DMSO can only be stored in glass or polyethylene plastic containers; it will dissolve everything else. Although this may sound a little scary, don't be alarmed because DMSO does not harm human or animal tissues.


2) You must be clean when you use it. If you have grease on your hands, of if a woman has nail polish on her nails, DMSO will dissolve these things and carry them into your body. Not good. Avoid using it if cosmetic creams are on the skin. Just wash your hands before using it and clean a wound before applying DMSO.


3) Don't let it touch your clothing. DMSO will dissolve the dyes from your clothes and damage the fibers in fabrics. Just put it on bare skin and don't allow clothing to touch it.


4) Skin itching and/or burning: Several minutes after applying DMSO, the skin often starts to itch like crazy. This effect can be minimized by adding water to make a more dilute solution. When the itching starts, just take a damp wash cloth and towel yourself off. By that time the DMSO has already been absorbed into the tissues. The itching is normal and it stops almost immediately when you towel yourself off.


5) Garlic Breath: DMSO is famous for causing a garlic-like breath odor. This is because the DMSO gets quickly metabolized to a compound called dimethyl sulfone which is a gas that gets expelled from the lungs. This odor is more pronounced when DMSO is applied frequently or if it is applied over a relatively large area. If you are using DMSO and you kiss someone, they will definitely comment on the odor.


6) Use more dilute DMSO solutions on sensitive or tender skin. I usually use DMSO full-strength if I have a pulled muscle in my arm or leg. However, using full-strength DMSO on tender skin such at the underarm or groin could cause a slight burning or blistering. I recommend a 50% DMSO/water dilution for tender skin.


7) Diluting DMSO with water: When you mix DMSO with water, an exothermic reaction occurs. This means heat is given off. I mean a LOT of heat, enough to burn you. When you mix water with DMSO, allow 10 to 15 for the mixture to return to room temperature before using it.


8) Applying DMSO: You can soak a cotton ball with DMSO to apply it to a sore muscle or wound. However, I generally just wash my hands, and then pour some DMSO into my cupped hand and apply it to the target area.


9) DMSO Products: DMSO is available as a liquid and in creams, gels and roll-on applicators. I tend to favor the straight 99% pure liquid, but any form will work.


10) Where to Buy DMSO: There are many online sites where DMSO can be purchased. DMSO is also carried by many veterinary supple stores. In my area we can purchase a pint of DMSO from our local Grange Co-op for about $6.00.


11) Current Status: Because DMSO is a natural agent, it cannot be patented which means drug companies have no interest or incentive to put money into researching it uses. Because drug companies don't study it, it does not get FDA approval. In 1970, the FDA approved DMSO for the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders in dogs and horses. Many veterinarians consider DMSO to be one of the most valuable therapeutic agents they have to work with. Also, in 1978, it was approved by the FDA in humans for the treatment of a relatively rare condition called Interstitial Cystitis which is a painful inflammation of the bladder. However, most of the clinical applications for DMSO remain unapproved by the FDA and consequently, most mainstream medical doctors are not aware of its remarkable benefits.


Don't Be Alarmed
Now that I've discussed all these warnings about DMSO, please don't be afraid to use it. I think every household should have DMSO on hand for healing emergencies. I also urge athletes to keep DMSO on hand to speed up the healing process from occasional sports injuries.

<![CDATA[Biomarkers: A Book That Changed My Life]]> /blog?post_id=57&title=biomarkers:-a-book-that-changed-my-life /blog?post_id=57 Biomarkers by William Evans, Ph.D. and Irwin Rosenberg, MD is one of the most important books I have ever read. The authors present 10 of the most reliable biological markers of aging and show that all ten of these markers are directly regulated by muscle mass. Weight training or strength/resistance training is the key. The authors claim that people do not need to become frail and weak as they age. They have shown that people of any age can engage in strength training programs and significantly REVERSE the biological markers of aging.


I read Biomarkers shortly after it was published in 1992. After reading it, I immediately purchased a Parabody universal gym and set it up in my garage. Now, I’ve been doing regular strength training several times a week for nearly 25 years.


Biological Age vs Chronological Age: You do NOT have to age biologically at the same rate you age chronologically. You will continue to have a birthday every year, but you DO NOT have to lose muscle mass and strength while you gain fat and develop insulin resistance and diabetes. Strength training is the key to this. The 10 biomarkers that respond to strength training are muscle mass, strength, metabolic rate, percent body fat, aerobic capacity, blood sugar control, cholesterol/HDL ratio, blood pressure, bone density and body temperature.


Continuing Research: After reading Biomarkers, I began to follow the subsequent scientific research that Dr. Evans conducted on the use of strength training in frail elderly people. The improvements that elderly people can make when they engage in strength training exercise programs are so incredible, they almost seem like science fiction.


In one study, men aged 60-72 engaged in strength exercises with their legs. The men used weight that was 80% of their 1-rep max and exercised 3 times per week for 12 weeks. The average increase in knee flexor strength was 227% and the average increase in knee extensor strength was 107%. CT scans documented an average 11.4% increase in muscle mass.


Aerobic Capacity: In the study cited above, VO2 max also increased significantly which shows that increasing muscle mass increases maximal aerobic power. This suggests that age-related loss in muscle mass may be a critical factor causing reduced aerobic capacity that is often seen in elderly individuals.


Amazing Gains: In another study, Evans and his colleagues examined the effects of high-intensity resistance training on a group of frail, institutionalized elderly men and women ranging from 87 to 96 years old. After only 8 weeks of strength training, the 10 subjects in this study increased muscle strength by almost 180% and muscle size by 11%.(1)


More recently, a similar intervention on frail nursing home residents demonstrated not only increases in muscle strength and size, but increased gait speed, stair climbing power, and balance. In addition, spontaneous activity levels increased significantly whereas the activity of a non-exercised control group was unchanged.


It should be pointed out that this was a very old, very frail population with of multiple chronic diseases. The increase in overall levels of physical activity have been a common observation numerous other studies conducted by Evans. Because muscle weakness is a primary deficit in many older individuals, increased strength may stimulate engagement in more aerobic activities like walking and cycling.


CrossFit: My personal strength training program has evolved over the years. In 2011 I a friend of mine introduced me to CrossFit. Crossfit is incredibly intense and demanding...and I fell in love with it. The exercises are different every day but one thing that remains constant is the degree of intensity. Every CrossFit class is designed to push an individual close to their maximum physical exertion capability. I went to CrossFit 3 times a week for about 5 years. How to Save Time Making Salads: Ross’ Salad Buzz YouTube Video

One of the most important requirements for the creation and maintenance of a healthy microbiome is the following: You MUST feed you probiotic bacteria well, or they will not thrive and survive. The type of “food” that probiotic bacteria require are the non-digestible fibers that are primarily found in multi-colored vegetables. Eating a wider range of different kinds of fiber-rich veggies will support the growth of a wider range of probiotic bacteria. Greater diversity = a healthier microbiome and a healthier you.

A salad with leafy greens and a variety of multi-colored vegetables is the best way to feed your microbiome. However, making salads is time consuming which is a major reason why many people don’t eat salads regularly.

I encourage you to watch my YouTube video titled: Ross’ Salad Buzz. In this video, I teach people how to save an enormous amount of time making salads. I’ll explain it here, but I encourage you to watch the video, it is only 8 minutes long.

Once a week I buy all my organically grown veggies. I wash them in a weak solution of hydrogen peroxide and then process them. I use our Cuisinart food processor to do much of the work, but you can easily cut the veggies up by hand if you don’t have a food processor. A couple items like a red pepper and a batch of parsley I cut or chop by hand. I toss all the cut, chopped & processed veggies together in my largest kitchen bowl.

Here’s the secret: After all the veggies have been processed, squeeze a whole medium sized lemon and pour the lemon juice over the processed veggies. Use a pair of salad tongs to toss everything well so that the lemon juice is well mixed into the buzz mix. The vitamin C in the lemon juice is an antioxidant that protects the processed veggies from spoiling. After mixing in the lemon juice, I transfer the buzz to a large Tupperware container and store it in the refrigerator. It stays fresh for about a week.

Most evenings my wife and I have a large salad as our main meal of the day. We try to feed our microbiome well every day. With the salad buzz already prepared, fixing a salad just takes a couple minutes. I take the container with the buzz out of the refrigerator along with a bag of lettuce and a container of sprouts. A handful of lettuce, a pinch of sprouts and a big scoop of salad buzz. Presto, you’ve got your salad made. We add some wild caught salmon or some beans, seeds & nuts for protein.

L-theanine is herbal compound that occurs naturally in tea leaves. It has been shown to be an amazingly effective, fast acting anti-anxiety agent. Research on human volunteers has reveals that L-theanine works in several different ways to produce a sense of relaxation within approximately 20 to 40 minutes after ingestion. Theanine’s anti-anxiety effects also help many people with insomnia get to sleep faster.


One of theanine’s mechanisms involves its ability to increase the calming alpha brain waves in humans while decreasing the brain's active beta waves.(1) This helps create a state of deep relaxation and mental alertness similar to what is achieved through meditation and some forms of yoga.

Another reason theanine is an effective anti-anxiety agent is due to the fact that it easily gets crosses the blood-brain barrier where it gets converted into GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) which is the primary calming neurotransmitter in humans.


A third way theanine produces calming effects is that it blocks the binding of the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamic acid to the glutamate receptors in the brain.


One study, published in the journal Human Psychopharmacology, compared theanine with Xanax (alprazolam). In a double-blind trial, volunteers were given either 200 mg of theanine, 1 mg of alprazolam or a placebo on separate occasions. Thus, all participants were tested with each of the three treatments. Following each dose, the researchers recorded measurements of anxiety both before and after an experimentally-created anxiety-producing activity.


The results were remarkable. Theanine (but not Xanax/alprazolam or the placebo) produced relaxing effects at the initial measurement of whether a person felt tranquil vs troubled. This documents that theanine is fast-acting. This is even more impressive because theanine was being compared to a relatively high dose (1 mg) of alprazolam. Lower doses (0.25 to 0.5 mg) of alprazolam are generally used at bedtime as a sleep aid.


Theanine's superior performance compared to the strong potentially addictive benzodiazepine alprazolam is exciting news for people who are seeking a safer more effective therapy from anxiety.


So, in summary, we have a natural herbal compound that gets absorbed, easily enters the brain and gets converted into GABA, it increases alpha and decreasing beta brain waves, and it also lowers the activity of excitatory glutamate receptors. Each of these functions contributes to theanine's calming anti-anxiety effects. Whereas other relaxing products like kava kava, valerian and St. John's Wort can cause drowsiness, theanine does not cause drowsiness, sedation of impair an individual's motor skills.


Anxiety cause sleep problems for many people. Although theanine does not cause drowsiness, its anti-anxiety effects help many people with anxiety get to sleep easier and have better quality sleep.


And there are more benefits. Placebo-controlled studies report that people taking theanine have lower heart rates and lower levels of several stress hormones. Interestingly, brain wave studies report that theanine produces a significantly greater effect in anxious subjects compared to calm subjects.


Theanine occurs in two mirror-image molecules, called L-theanine and R-theanine (labled for “left” and “right”). Since only the L-form is active, only L-theanine is used in commercial products. Hence, L-theanine is often just called theanine. A summary of the research studies conducted on theanine is available at the Suntheanine WEB site.


While L-theanine occurs naturally in tea leaves, a single cup of tea is estimated to contain only about 20 mg of L-theanine, whereas the effective dosage for most studies is 200 mg. Thus, L-theanine supplements must be take in order to achieve its therapeutic effects.


Dose: As a sleep aid, take 100 mg 30 minutes before, or at bedtime. People with persistent anxiety can take 100 mg 2 or 3 times daily.

CoQ10 Dramatically Extends Life Span: Studies evaluating things that influence lifespan are difficult to conduct in humans because they take too long. Instead, researchers use small animal models which compresses the story into a much shorter time scale. I want to discuss an experiment done with mice that reveals the power of coenzyme Q10. This experiment was conducted by Emile Bliznakov, MD who subsequently wrote a book titled The Miracle Nutrient: Coenzyme Q10.

In this experiment, Dr. Bliznakov started out with 100 “old” female white mice that were between 16 to 18 months of age. One week for mice is roughly equivalent to one year of human life. Thus, at the beginning of this experiment, the mice being used were in their sixties or seventies in human terms. At 16-18 months of age, these “old” mice were beginning to show some signs of decreased immunity and declining bodily functions.

The mice were divided into two groups of 50 and maintained on optimally nutritious diets. One group acted as the controls while the second group was regularly given doses of CoQ10. At 28 weeks after the beginning of the study, 70% of the control mice had died compared to only 40% of the CoQ10-treated mice. At 36 weeks, 100% of the control mice were dead while about 40% of the CoQ10-treated mice were still alive and active with most not showing the normal signs of physical deterioration that are commonly associated with advanced age.

At the 56th week, 10% of the CoQ10-treated mice were still alive and thriving. This is almost twice as long as these mice would normally be expected to survive beyond the beginning of the experiment. At the 80th week (remember the last control mouse died at week 36), 4 mice were still alive and at the 82nd week, the last mouse died. In human terms, this is a lifespan of roughly 130 years of age!

During the 1990s as my interest in coenzyme Q10 was growing, I had several long phone conversations with Dr. Bliznakov about his research. He told me that from week 28 up to week 36 when the last control mouse died, there were amazing observable differences in the appearance and activity between the two groups of mice. Remember, week 28 to 36 is roughly equivalent to 92 to 100 years of age in humans. The aging control mice were listless and basically lay in their cages most of the time. Also, patches of their fur had fallen out and the fur that remained was dull and matted. On the other hand, the fur on the elderly CoQ10-treated mice remained glossy, their skin still appeared healthy and they maintained normal levels of activity moving around in their cages up until they died. Coenzyme Q10 is remarkable in its ability to neutralize free radicals, reduce the rate of mitochondrial DNA damage, and slow the aging process.

Drugs that Deplete CoQ10: The following classes of commonly prescribed prescription drugs interfere with the body's ability to produce coenzyme Q10: oral contraceptives, menopausal hormone replacement therapy (HRT), statin cholesterol-lowering drugs, medications for diabetes (both sulfonylureas and biguanides), several classes of blood pressure-lowering medications, heart medications called beta-blockers, tricyclic antidepressants and major tranquilizers.

I think everyone can benefit from taking coenzyme Q10 as a daily nutritional supplement, but it is especially important for people who take any of the classes of drugs I just mentioned above, because those drugs interfere with CoQ10 synthesis. How many people are affected by drugs that interfere with coenzyme Q10 synthesis? The numbers are staggering. According to the latest statistics, over 15 million Americans are taking statin drugs. In the United States in 2011, there were 94.1 million prescriptions for the statin drug simvastatin alone. In 2011 there were also 48.3 million prescriptions for the most commonly prescribed diabetic drug known as metformin which also causes CoQ10 depletion.

Dr. Bliznakov’s study shows that taking CoQ10 regularly not only lengthens life, it also dramatically improves the quality of life. Actually, I believe this is true for all antioxidant nutrients. They help minimize free radical damage which over time will slow down physical aging resulting in a longer healthier life.

Coenzyme Q10 Controversy: There is a lot of misinformation being circulated about coenzyme Q10. For example, Kaneka Corp. in Japan is one of the largest producers of CoQ10 in the world. They claim their ubiquinol form of CoQ10 is better absorbed. Actually, when ubiquinol is ingested, it immediately gets oxidized (reconverted) back to ubiquinone in the gut. Thus, many people are wasting money by purchasing the more expensive ubiquinol, which quickly gets converted to ubiquinone when it is ingested. Kaneka’s claims are great marketing, but not supported by scientific studies.

The melting point of CoQ10 is 10 degrees above body temperature. Thus, CoQ10 is generally crystallized. We CAN NOT absorb crystals. We can only absorb single molecules. In most commercial CoQ10 products which are in oil, the CoQ10 is crystallized in the capsules. You can easily observe this by cutting open a capsule and smearing the contents onto a piece of wax paper and then shinning a flashlight up from below. Even commercial CoQ10 products that are in solution in the capsule will recrystallize in the body.

Several years ago Italian scientist Dr. Ravaglia and his colleagues designed a unique study to determine the most important factor for healthy aging. A group of 75 HEALTHY elderly people ranging from 90 to 106 years old were selected for this study.

The researchers evaluated an enormous amount of data including anthropometric data (height, weight, skin-folk thickness, body circumference at the waist, hip & chest), a wide range of blood values, as well as aspects related to diet, nutrition and lifestyle.

The concept for this study was brilliant. Instead of studying old people who are sick, these researchers decided to study healthy elderly people and determine the most important factors that enabled them to maintain relatively good health well into their 90s and beyond 100 years old.

The outcome of this study is very important for individuals who want to maintain good health as they age. It turns out the most important factor for healthy longevity in MAINTAIN YOUR MUSCLE MASS.

This means that individuals must regularly engage in some form of strength or resistance training. These are things like your resting metabolic rate, body fat percentage, strength, aerobic capacity, blood pressure, blood sugar and insulin sensitivity, cholesterol/HDL ratio, etc.

I read BioMarkers when it first came out in 1992 and I immediately made an important change in my life. I purchases a multi-station universal gym weight lifting and set it up in my garage. I've now been doing strength training 2-3 times a week for over 20 years. I'm not trying to be a bodybuilder. I just have a moderate routine that enables me to maintain my muscle mass.

However, I am thinking of selling my universal gym because a year ago I learned about the CrossFit exercise program. CrossFit is a much more intense strength and conditioning exercise program that works your body in a myriad of ways with each class pushing you to your maximum capable level of physical exertion. I am totally addicted to CrossFit, but that is another story for another time.

<![CDATA[My Response to Biased JAMA Article That "Bashed" Nutritional Supplements]]> /blog?post_id=31&title=my-response-to-biased-jama-article-that-bashed-nutritional-supplements /blog?post_id=31 The Health Care Crisis Continues:

Many of you know me as The Natural Pharmacist. I feel compelled to comment on an article just published in the October 11, 2016 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) titled The Supplement Paradox: Negligible Benefits, Robust Consumption. Many people believe the healthcare system in America is dysfunctional. It really has very little to do with health. Its primary focus in treating the symptoms of disease. This recent JAMA article highlights part of the problem.

JAMA Embarrassment:

JAMA is one of the most widely read and respected medical journals. However, when it publishes articles like the one I am addressing, it makes me realize that JAMA is primarily the voice of traditional medicine, which is of course influenced greatly by the pharmaceutical industry.

The article starts out by saying, "During the past 2 decades, a steady stream of high-quality studies evaluating dietary supplements has yielded predominantly disappointing results about potential health benefits, whereas evidence of harm has continued to accumulate.” (I added the red highlights).

Articles and reports of this nature are an example of typical medical industry ignorance and bias. Something is drastically wrong when the FDA and other regulatory agencies continue to attack nutritional supplements, while ignoring studies which report that FDA-approved prescription drug use kills hundreds of thousands of people every year.

Nutritional Supplements Are Safe:

There are less than a handful of deaths each year due to nutritional supplements so in reality, nutritional supplements are quite safe. In fact, I have hundreds of studies in my data base reporting both health benefits and safety from nutritional supplements, often at doses higher than the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA).

However, a 2003 report from the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics reported that the total number of deaths caused by conventional medicine was estimated to be an astonishing 784,000 per year. This should be an astounding reality check for every citizen because it means that the American medical system is the #1 cause of death and injury in the United States. In comparison, in 2001, deaths from cardiovascular disease reached about 700,000, while the deaths from cancer was just over 553,000.

Drug-Induced Nutrient Depletions:

Almost all drugs have side effects and most drugs actually deplete nutrients from your body. In my book The Drug-Induced Nutrient Depletion Handbook, I teach people which nutrients are being depleted by the drugs they are taking. For example, did you know that oral contraceptives deplete 14 different nutrients from women’s bodies? Frequently these nutrient depletions cause additional health problems, which cause people to go to the doctor to get another drug when in fact the appropriate nutritional supplement often prevents or corrects a problem.

Drugs do not fix health problems; they just treat symptoms. For example, blood pressure medications do not cure your high blood pressure. They just suppress a symptom that we call hypertension while the underlying problem continues to worsen, often resulting in a heart attack or stroke at some future date. And, antidepressants and antipsychotic drugs don’t cure mental health problems. The medical profession is lying when they lead people to believe that the drug that is being prescribed is going to fix or cure them. In her book A Mind of Your Own, psychiatrist Kelly Brogan said, “Before I stopped prescribing drugs, I had never cured a patient.”

Most health problems are caused by diet and lifestyle issues, especially the ever-increasing load of environmental toxins people are being exposed to regularly. Toxins are the primary drivers of disease. Drugs don’t fix people. Changes in diet and lifestyle are the path to improved health.

In closing, I just want to say, JAMA, shame on you for bashing nutritional supplements and suggesting that nutritional supplements are a great cause of harm and health problems in the United States. Let us instead take a long hard look at the FDA, the pharmaceutical industry, the medical profession and the belief that prescription drugs are the path to better health. In reality, prescription drugs and the medical profession are killing more people than heart disease and cancer. Stop bashing nutritional supplements and trying to increase regulations on the nutritional supplement industry when the vast majority of health problems are due to the drugs people are taking and environmental toxins.

<![CDATA[Cancer Breakthrough: Suppressing Cancer Stem Cells]]> /blog?post_id=24&title=cancer-breakthrough:-suppressing-cancer-stem-cells /blog?post_id=24

The new understanding about the role that cancer stem cells play in both the initiation of cancer and cancer metastasis is an exciting scientific breakthrough in cancer therapy. Therapies that target cancer stem cells will revolutionize cancer therapy. In the first section of this article, I will discuss what cancer stem cells are, and the role they play in the initiation of cancer and the development of cancer metastasis (spreading). In the second section, I will discuss anti-inflammatory therapies that suppress cancer stem cell activity and allow the body to heal.

Every type of tissue and organ contains a few stem cells. Stem cells are immature or undeveloped cells that normally remain dormant. However, when tissues are damaged, stem cells are activated and begin to produce new cells (called daughter cells) which can develop into whatever type of cell is needed. For example, if you get cut, local stem cells are activated, producing daughter cells which develop into new skin cells to heal the wound.

We now know that inflammation generates free radicals, which damage the DNA in stem cells, creating cancer stem cells. Then the cancer stem cells (with damaged DNA) begin producing large amounts of new daughter cells, which become a tumor.

Our understanding of cancer stem cells (CSCs) and the role they play in the generation of cancers and cancer metastasis is accelerating rapidly. The first article on cancer stem cells appeared in PubMed in Nov. 1980. A second article was published inn 1983. Then nothing appeared until one paper in 2001 and one in 2002. That is a total of four papers on cancer stem cells over a period of 22 years. Compare that with the past ten years (2007-2016) which saw a total of 2,899 papers on cancer stem cells published in PubMed.

The Cancer Stem Cell Hypothesis: On April 11, 2016, I conducted a broader search using the data bases accessible through Goggle Scholar. This search revealed that 136,000 studies have been published on cancer stem cells and 5,590 studies have been published on the Cancer Stem Cell Hypothesis. The results of these data base searches reveal that a great deal of scientific research is being conducted on cancer stem cells. However, it takes roughly 20-25 years for new information to be accepted and integrated into main stream medical practice. Sadly, most traditional oncologists are not aware of the new research regarding the role of cancer stem cells.

Here is an example of the type of new research that I am talking about. An article titled Targeting Cancer Stem Cells: A New Therapy To Cure Cancer Patients was published in the American Journal of Cancer Research (April, 2012). Another example; in September 2016, Case Western Reserve University and the National Center for Regenerative Medicine hosted a 4-day conference that was totally devoted to cancer stem cells titled: 2016 Cancer Stem Cell Conference in Cleveland, OH. The 2018 Cancer Stem Cell conference is now being planned.

Cancer Stem Cells Are Responsible For Metastasis & Treatment Resistance: The bulk of a tumor mass (about 99%) consists of regular tumor cells, called daughter cells, while about 1% of a tumor mass consists of cancer stem cells. Primary tumor cells can cause problems but they are not the primary cause of cancer deaths. It is cancer metastasis that kills.

Cancer stem cells are resistant to chemotherapy & radiation. Hence, chemotherapy & radiation target the rapidly dividing cells in the tumor mass, but they do not kill the cancer stem cells. In fact, chemo & radiation activate cancer stem cells, causing them to exit the tumor and travel to distant locations where they initiate a new cancer growth. This is called metastasis. Over 90% of cancer patients die from metastasis.

After a course of chemo or radiation, an oncologist may tell a patient that the therapy successfully shrank the tumor by 60% or 80%. This should not be viewed as a therapeutic victory. Although the tumor mass was shrunk, cancer stem cells were activated, creating a high probability of future metastasis.

Inflammation & Cancer: Inflammation plays a major role in the initiation of cancer and the development of cancer metastasis. Initially, inflammation causes DNA damage to stem cells, converting them to cancerous stem cells. An increasing number of studies report that various types of anti-inflammatory therapies can target and kill cancer stem cells.

Instead of trying to kill ALL the cells in a tumor with chemotherapy & radiation, leading cancer scientists now believe it is more effective to use anti-inflammatory therapies that directly target cancer stem cells. When stem cells are eliminated, cancers cannot grow or metastasize/spread to other parts of the body.

Revolution In Cancer Therapy: A landmark paper, authored by Antonina Kurtova, et al, was published in the January 8, 2015 issue of the highly prestigious journal Nature titled: Blocking PGE2-induced tumor repopulation abrogates bladder cancer chemoresistance. I realize this title won’t mean much to people without a medical background, but I want to summarize the revolutionary information put forth in this article.

a) Chemotherapy stimulates cancer stem cells and promotes metastasis

b) Anti-inflammatory therapies are the most effective way to treat/suppress cancer stem cells

c) Anti-inflammatory therapies will also help inhibit metastasis

d) The authors recommend using anti-inflammatory drugs such as Celebrex (celecoxib), which have significant negative side effects

e) Instead of drugs, I recommend using nutritional or other natural products that provide non-toxic anti-inflammatory activity.

Thomas Levy, MD, JD, is a writer I highly respect. His new book is Death by Calcium: Proof of the toxic effects of dairy and calcium supplements. Levy’s book is highly controversial because it contradicts what we have been told and led to believe about the importance of ingesting adequate calcium in the form of milk and dairy products and calcium supplements. However, Levy meticulously backs up the claims in his book with valid scientific references.

Most people ingest far too much calcium. And, excess accumulates in cells, soft tissues and organs. Excess calcium calcifies and hardens wherever it gets deposited, whether it’s your arteries, heart or brain. In this post, I am going to review studies which report that your leg strength is one of the most reliable predictors of your longevity and the quality of your life as you age. And, doing squats regularly is the BEST exercise to build your leg strength.

Building Leg Strength Reduces Risk of Dying

In one study, 81 elderly patients were followed for a period of 4 years. By the end of the study, 26 people (32%) of the participants had died. The researchers discovered that the mass of an individual’s thigh muscle was inversely proportional to cardiovascular deaths and all-cause mortality. In other words, larger thigh muscle mass equates to reduced risk of death (Fukasawa H, et al. Eur J Clin Nutr. 2017 Jan;71(1):64-69).

Another study evaluated muscle mass, leg strength and fat mass in 1,280 men and women 55 and older. The results of this study revealed that your leg strength is the most important factor in determining your physical functionality and your risk of dying (Bourhard DR, et al. J Aging Health, 2011 March;23(2):313-328).

Squats Increase Insulin Sensitivity

So, why is increasing strength and muscle mass by doing squats so effective at reducing risk of death from all causes, improving your health and achieving life extension? Squats build muscle mass and strength in the largest muscles in your body, the gluts and quads in your thighs and butt. This in turn improves insulin sensitivity and helps regulate blood glucose and blood insulin levels.

Strength Building Exercises Produce “After Burn"

Building strength and muscle mass in your thighs also improves your metabolic rate which means you burn more calories and store less fat. This is why I strongly encourage everyone to engage in some form of strength building exercise on a regular basis. A session of weightlifting or other type of resistance exercise results in “after burn” which refers to the fact that more calories are burned during the recovery period after the workout than are burned during the actual workout session.

Other benefits achieved from building leg strength include improving testosterone levels, lowering levels of the stress hormone cortisol, and increasing bone density in the hip and thigh bones.

Falls--Nursing Home Admissions and Death

Numerous studies report that falls are the number one reason for admissions to nursing homes and also a leading cause of death in the elderly.

SQUATS Increase Leg Strength, Reduce Falls & Increase Longevity

Squats are by far the best exercise to strengthen the largest muscles in your body, specifically your quads, gluts in your buttocks and the muscles in your hip and knee joints.

Strong Legs = Healthy Brain: In one study, 162 sets of healthy female twins between the ages of 43 to 73 were followed for ten years. Cognitive functions such as learning and memory were evaluated at the beginning and end of the study. The brains of a subset of identical twins also assessed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The researchers reported that leg strength was a better predictor of brain health than any of the other lifestyle factors evaluated in the study. In fact, leg strength was a reliable predictor of both cognitive aging and the degree of loss of total gray matter in the brain. (Steves CJ, et al. Gerontology. 2016;62(2):138-49).

BIOMARKERS: A book that changed my life. In Biomarkers, the authors show that ten of the most reliable biological markers of aging are ALL directly related to and regulated by muscle mass. regardless of your age or present physical condition, the aging process can be slowed -- or even reversed! (Biomarkers; Evans & Rosenthal. 1991;Fireside/Simon & Schuster).

YOU ARE NEVER TOO OLD: In one study, Evans and his colleagues examined the effects of high intensity, progressive resistance training in a group of frail, institutionalized elderly men and women aged 87-96. After only 8 weeks of strength training, the subjects in this trial increased their muscle strength by 174% and they increased the cross-sectional area (ie. size) of quadriceps by 10%. (Evans. J Nutr. May 1, 1997;127(5):9985-10035).

ALMOST UNBELIEVABLE: In another study, men aged 60-72 engages in strength exercises with their legs. They used a weight that was 80% of their 1-Rep Max and exercised 3 times a week for 12 weeks. The gains these men made in just 12 weeks were amazing. The average increase in knee flexor strength was 227%, the average increase in knee extensor strength was 107%, and CT scans documented an average 11.5% increase in leg muscle mass. (Frontera WR, et al. J Appl Physiol. 1988 March;64(3):1038-44).

HOW TO DO A PROPER SQUAT: Stand so that your knees are slightly bent, feet are firmly planted on the ground, and toes pointed outwards slightly, which helps with stabilization. The wider you put your feet, the more it works your glutes and hamstring (back of the leg), and the easier it will be to stabilize. As you begin to squat, your butt begins to move back and stick out. Attempt to keep your chest and shoulders upright, keep facing forward with eyes focused straight ahead and keep your back straight.

For individuals who less fit, I recommend that you brace yourself with the back of a chair, a counter-top or a pair of door knobs for balance. As you gain in strength, start doing your squats with hand weights to increase resistance.

The disaster known as Hurricane Harvey has prompted me to write this brief report. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) director Brock Long stated, “Harvey is probably the worst disaster in Texas history.”

I’m writing this report to emphasize the health hazards that can result from exposure to mold and I also want to provide some proactive tips that will help people prevent or minimize mold-related health problems if they do get exposed to molds.

Molds are a type of fungus that grow exceedingly well in damp, wet environments. Hurricane Harvey will create a mecca for mold growth. Virtually every home or building that sustains flood damage will experience mold growth.

While not all types of mold are harmful, many are classified as toxic molds. Molds reproduce by forming spores, which are so small they are not visible to the naked eye. It is the spores produced by toxic molds that contain extremely toxic compounds called mycotoxins. The spores are so tiny and lightweight that they easily travel through the air. While exposure can come from ingestion (eating) or from topical (skin) absorption, by far the most common and dangerous form of exposure comes from inhalation or breathing the mold spores.

We have natural defense mechanisms that prevent many inhaled substances from entering our lungs such as coughing, sneezing, nasal mucous and also nasal hairs that act as filters. However, mold spores are so tiny they can bypass our defenses and gain entry into the lungs. In addition to their small size, mold spores can overwhelm our defenses by the sheer magnitude of their numbers. Measuring from 1 to 20 microns in size, approximately 250,000 spores can fit on the head of a pin and people often inhale in excess of 500,000 spores per minute in a moldy environment.

Once mold spores and/or their mycotoxins enter the lungs and pass into systemic circulation, they often cause inflammatory responses in the body that can manifest as multi-symptom and multi-system health problems. In fact, mold toxicity is often misdiagnosed because the symptoms can mimic so many other illnesses.

MOLD, MYCOTOXINS, and CANCER: Some mycotoxins are known to increase the risk of developing cancer. Thus, cancer is another health risk associated with exposure to molds and mycotoxins in water damaged buildings in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. Aflatoxins, which are known to occur in water damaged buildings, are powerful known carcinogens. In fact, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), which is the specialized cancer agency of the World Health Organization (WHO), has classified aflatoxins as a Category 1 carcinogen.

MYCOTOXINS DEPLETE GLUTATHIONE: Exposure to molds and mycotoxins create intense inflammation and free radical oxidative stress. Glutathione plays a major role as an antioxidant and a key regulator of detoxification to combat mycotoxin toxicity. However, exposure to mold and mycotoxins frequently overwhelm the body’s ability to synthesize glutathione. Consequently, glutathione depletion is a common finding in patients suffering from mold and mycotoxin exposure. In fact, increased inflammatory activity during mycotoxin exposure may be in large part due to mycotoxin-induced glutathione depletion.

At low doses, the body detoxifies mycotoxins such as aflatoxin by binding the toxin to glutathione, which then get excreted. However, at higher levels of exposure, glutathione levels are depleted. When this happens, the mycotoxins exert their toxic effects by damaging cells throughout the body, especially nerves, lungs, kidneys and the liver. Hence, mycotoxins are classified as neurotoxins (nerves), hepatotoxins (liver), nephrotoxins (kidneys) and immunotoxins (immune system). Actually, mycotoxins are toxic to every tissue and organ system in the body.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) emphasizes the importance of identifying fungal, mold and mycotoxin diseases early enough in the course of a patient’s illness to provide life-saving treatment. To highlight the seriousness of fungal & mold-related diseases, the CDC created and launched the first Fungal Disease Awareness Week which ran from August 14-18, 2017. BE PROACTIVE….BOOST YOUR GLUTATHIONE LEVELS: Boosting glutathione levels is one of the most proactive things people can do to help protect themselves if they are in an area where there is a greater risk of being exposed to molds and mycotoxins. There are several ways to boost glutathione levels. Nutritional precursors for glutathione synthesis include N-acetyl cysteine (NAC), lipoic acid, selenium and the herb milk thistle. Metformin (brand name Glucophage) is the most commonly prescribed drug in the world for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Because metformin effectively lowers both blood glucose and blood insulin levels, it also reduces the risk to many other chronic degenerative diseases. Consequently, in addition to its use in the treatment of type 2 diabetes, metformin is now becoming recognized as a therapy to slow down aging.

In 2016 the FDA made an unprecedented announcement when it approved a study to examine the effect of metformin on the biology of aging in humans. This study is titled Targeting Aging with Metformin, or the TAME study. This is the first time in history that the FDA has approved any human clinical trial with a goal of establishing a drug’s ability to protect against multiple diseases of aging. In previous studies with different species of animals, therapy with metformin has resulted in significant increases in lifespan., Many healthy people are now electing to take metformin for its ability to slow down aging processes and increase longevity. I want to explain how metformin works so you will understand why it produces so many additional health benefits beyond treating type 2 diabetes.

Metformin’s Benefits

Metformin works by inhibiting the synthesis of glucose in the liver. This enables the pancreas to reduce the production of insulin which results in lower levels of blood glucose and insulin. This also results in an increase in insulin sensitivity, which means the cells’ insulin receptors function better. Metformin also decreases appetite and food consumption, induces weight and fat loss and decreases triglycerides and LDL-cholesterol levels. Later in this article I will also discuss the new understanding of how metformin also provides significant anti-cancer benefits.

Sugar in the body can combine with proteins rendering them nonfunctional. This process is called glycosylation and it is one of the primary causes of aging. Because metformin lowers blood glucose levels, it reduces glycosylation, which means you are slowing down the destruction of proteins throughout the body; you are slowing down your aging process.

Insulin Resistance

People with type 2 diabetes have insulin resistance, which means the insulin receptors are less sensitive to blood sugar, or glucose. Consequently, the pancreas must produce more insulin in an effort to normalize blood glucose levels. This results in a condition known as hyperinsulinemia, or excess insulin.

Dangers of Excess Insulin

Excess insulin is extremely damaging and is one of the main causes of accelerated aging. Excess insulin causes damage to virtually all organ systems in the body, especially blood vessels, the kidneys, eyes and nerves. Also, elevated insulin levels increase risks to obesity, high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, chronic inflammation and Alzheimer’s disease. By lowering insulin levels, metformin reduces risks to all these diseases.

Metformin’s Exciting Anti-Cancer Benefits: Introduction. In 2009, the results of a large metformin trial were published. In this 10-year trial, it was discovered that diabetic patients taking metformin had a 54% lower risk of developing any type of cancer compared to diabetic patients who had not taken metformin. And, for people with cancer, metformin users had a much greater length of survival.

Metformin’s Anti-Cancer Benefits: Part 1-Starving Cancer Cells.Normal cells utilize oxygen for energy. However cancer cells have a deranged metabolic process which requires them to utilize glucose for energy. Since metformin lowers blood glucose/sugar levels, it helps to starve cancer cells by limiting their ability to access enough fuel, or glucose, to sustain their rapid growth.

Metformin’s Anti-Cancer Benefits: Part 2-Targeting Cancer Stem Cells (CSCs): Cancer stem cells (also called cancer-initiating cells) represent a tremendous breakthrough in our understanding of cancer. It is estimated that a tumor mass consists of 99% tumor cells and 1% cancer stem cells. Tumor cells are relatively benign; they cannot metastasize. It is the CSCs that are really dangerous because they can migrate (metastasize) and initiate new tumor growth. Chemotherapy targets the benign tumor cells but does not kill CSCs. Chemo may cause an 80% shrinkage in the size of a tumor, but this is relatively inconsequential because it is not effecting the CSCs. Chemotherapy actually activates CSCs, causing them to metastasize, and it is metastasis that is responsible for most cancer deaths. Exciting news regarding cancer is that metformin selectively targets cancer stem cells and acts to block tumor growth and prolong remission.

Metformin-Induced Nutrient Depletions: Metformin is a relatively safe drug that offers significant benefits. However, in my book The Drug-Induced Nutrient Depletion Handbook (Lexi-Comp, 2001) I list studies which report that metformin can cause a depletion of several nutrients which include: vitamin B1, vitamin B12, folic acid and coenzyme Q10. Consequently, I encourage people taking metformin to also take a daily nutritional supplement that has doses of vitamins B1, B12 and folate that are higher than the RDA levels, which I feel are ridiculously low to begin with. I also advise taking 100 mg or more of coenzyme Q10 daily. CoQ10 is a fat-soluble nutrient. Taking CoQ10 at the largest meal of the day will likely enhance CoQ10 absorption.

Most of you who know me as The Natural Pharmacist know that I favor the use of natural therapies whenever possible. However, I’m making an exception with metformin. Metformin has an excellent safety record and now we realize that it also provides important wide-ranging health benefits. I got my physician to write me a prescription and I now take 500 mg of metformin twice daily.

People frequently ask me for recommendations on where to get current information on health topics. I finally decided to list some of my favorite resources for health-related continuing education and post it on my blog. However, I’m going to start by providing a little background about how I developed my passion for learning and teaching about health. I graduated from the University of Wisconsin/Madison in 1966 with a BS degree in pharmacy. Although I had gained a great deal of knowledge about biochemistry, physiology and medicine, I eventually found the practice of retail pharmacy to be quite repetitive, boring, and unsatisfying.

My Story

In 1979 I got introduced to yoga and it changed my life. Up until that time I consumed the Standard American Diet (SAD diet) and really didn’t know anything about health. Through yoga I met people who exercised regularly and ate healthfully. Yoga students also introduced me to health magazines, health newsletters and health-related books. I quickly developed an insatiable desire for health-related information.

My epiphany came when I realized that my degree in pharmacy gave me the ability to understand the science underlying all the new health-related information I was learning about. And ya know what….it just made sense. And, it continues to make sense. So, for the past 36+ years, I have been somewhere between passionately and neurotically pursuing a deeper and deeper understanding of all things related to health.

As my learning curve accelerated, I began teaching and write about health and natural therapies. In October 1999, I was named as one to the Top 50 Most Influential Pharmacists in America by American Druggist magazine for my educational work in natural medicine. I’ve written ten books and I am now producing online educational seminars. In 2016 I launched a 4.5 hour online seminar titled Natural Therapies for Depression & Anxiety. In Jan. 2017 I will launch Natural Therapies for ADD & ADHD.

In my Bio on my WEB site which is naturalpharmacist.net I state that one of my greatest attributes as a health educator is the fact that I am bilingual. The two languages I speak are English and Science. I am able to translate and discuss the scientific explanations for health-related topics in a way that is easily understandable to the general public.

The Townsend Letter

The Townsend Letter is one of my most valued sources of continuing education. It is a monthly magazine/periodical on alternative medicine. Each issue addresses a specific health topic and authors from varying health backgrounds submit articles from their perspective. There are also a number of highly respected health educators who are regular monthly contributors.


Life Extension Magazine

This is a monthly magazine offered by the Life Extension Foundation (LEF). The magazine always contains in depth articles on cutting edge health topics. LEF is also a great source of high-quality nutritional supplements. I spend a great deal of my professional life attending and speaking at various health and medical conferences. These conferences, conventions and symposiums usually have a great line up of speakers on various health topics, technologies and/or new products. Also, most of these conferences have an exhibit hall where hundreds (and sometimes thousands) of companies have a booth presenting their products. Just walking the aisles in the exhibit halls and examining the companies and their products is a great educational experience. Here are some of the conferences I attend regularly:


Natural Products Expo West Expo West is held in March every year at the Anaheim Convention Center. This is the largest health show in the world. In 2015 there were over 70,000 attendees and 2,700 companies exhibiting their products.


Natural Products Expo East Expo East is held in Baltimore during September every year. Expo East is the east coast “cousin” to Expo West. In 2016 Expo East had 28,000 attendees and 1,450 companies exhibiting.

American Association of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M): A4M hosts their World Congress every year at the Venetian/Palazzo in LasVegas. The show is attended by thousands of medical professionals and hundreds of exhibiting companies. I’ll be speaking again at the A4M conference in December 2016.

International & American Association of Clinical Nutrition (IAACN): IAACN is nutrition organization that offers a certification program in nutrition (Certified Clinical Nutritionist or CCN). The 27th annual IAACN Symposium will be held in Dallas, TX on Oct. 11-13th. I was a founding member and have been on the Scientific Advisory Board for many years.

The American College of Nutrition (ACN): ACN was established in 1959. They have an annual conference in a different city every year. I attended my first ACN conference in 2017 which was held in San Diego November 9-11th. They had great speakers and I found ACN to be a strong vibrant organization. I plan to join ACN and become involved with organization.

The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM): I attended my first AAEM conference in 2016 and came away with a high level of respect for AAEM physicians. They have the deepest knowledge of biochemistry of any group of physicians I’ve ever met. The speakers were excellent and I admire the dedication these physicians have in working with patients with complex health problems such as Lyme’s disease, mold toxicity, multiple chemical sensitivity, etc.

The American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM): ACAM is an association of integrative medicine physicians. They host an annual convention in Las Vegas each year. ACAM offers continuing medical education for physicians and they also provide a referral network of physicians who provide integrative medicine therapies.

Probiota Americas has partnered with the International Probiotics Association (IPA). These two organizations have teamed up to present one of the world’s best conferences that explores the scientific frontier of probiotics. I attended in 2015 and 2016 and I presented a Poster on Lactobacillus fermentum ME-3 at the 2016 conference.

These days virtually everyone is stressed for time and many people struggle to find time to work regular exercise into their busy lives. If you typically use lack-of-time as your excuse for not exercising, the study I’m reporting on today annihilates your excuse(s).

Over the past decade, numerous studies have touted the benefits of high intensity interval training: greater benefits in less time. However, many of these studies have had some shortcomings (usually due to funding limitations) such as short duration, lack of control group, or only measuring a few fitness benefits. Consequently, some people have still questioned whether or not short bursts of high intensity exercise are superior to traditional endurance training.

Recently Martin Gibala, Ph.D. and his colleagues at McMaster University in Canada organized and conducted an extremely well designed study that compared the benefits of very short, very intense workouts with traditional moderately intense endurance workouts such as long runs or bike rides.

THE OUTCOME: Benefits From 1-Minute of Intense Exercise Equals 45-Minutes Of Moderate Exercise. Expressed another way, during the 12-week trial, the high-intensity interval cyclists rode their bikes for a total of 6 hours with only 36 minutes at high intensity compared to 27 hours of riding for the moderate intensity endurance cyclists.

STUDY DESIGN: 25 out-of-shape young men were recruited and randomly divided into three groups. The control group made no change in their non-exercising lifestyles. The second group began a traditional endurance-workout routine, which consisted of riding a stationary bicycle at a moderate pace in the exercise lab for 45 minutes, with a two-minute warm-up and three-minute cool down.

The third group engaged in interval training, using the shortest workout ever designed to document the benefits of short-duration high-intensity interval exercise. The high-intensity cyclists warmed up for two minutes on stationary bicycles, then pedaled as hard and fast as possible for 20 seconds, followed by a slow pace for two minutes. This cycle was repeated two more times; 20 seconds of all-out sprinting followed by 2 minutes of slow-riding recovery. At the end, they continued peddling slowly for a 3 minute cool-down. TAKE HOME: 3 months of both short-term high intensity exercise and moderate intensity endurance exercise produced virtually identical benefits in health and fitness. Hence, neither approach was superior. The major differences were TIME and INTENSITY: 36 minutes of high-intensity exercise (6-hours total with warm-ups & cool downs) compared to 27 hours of moderate-intensity endurance exercise.

The title of this study was: Twelve Weeks of Sprint Interval Training Improves Indices of Cardiometabolic Health Similar to Traditional Endurance Training despite a Five-Fold Lower Exercise Volume and Time Commitment. It was published in the journal PLoS One, April 26, 2016.

I just wanted to review this study to emphasize how people can save an enormous amount of time and obtain significant health benefits by engaging in high-intensity interval training. I think it is also important for people to realize that regularly riding or running at the same moderate level of intensity does not increase your ability to take in and utilize oxygen and it does increase your muscular strength.

Sprint 8 requires 8 cycles consisting of 30 seconds all-out-intensity exertion followed by 90 seconds of moderate intensity exercise recovery. Dr. Mercola’s interview with Phil Campbell provides an excellent explanation and demonstration of Sprint 8.

Any type of aerobic exercise can be used for Sprint 8 such as fast-walking, jogging, running, cycling, swimming, etc. Since I have total knee replacements in both my knees, I prefer to do my Sprint 8 sessions on an elliptical trainer which allows me engage with low impact on my knees.

One of the great benefits of engaging in Sprint 8 is its documented ability to dramatically increase production of human growth hormone (HGH), which is a key to health and fitness. Phil Campbell emphasizes that an intense exercise program like Sprint 8 should not be done more that 2 or 3 times per week.

Why Sprinting Improves Endurance: The following information comes from an article published on Dr. Gabe Mirkin's Fitness and Health E-Zine titled Why Sprinting Improves Endurance (11/29/2009). Mirkin reported on research conducted by Jens Bangsbo at the University of Copenhagen. Bangsbo instructed competitive distance runners to REDUCE their weekly milage by 25%, and to also run 8 to 12 30-second maximum speed sprints 2 or 3 times per week for 6 to 9 weeks.

The sprint group made significant improvement in both their 3K (1.8 mile) and 10K (6 mile) race times and half of these athletes ran their BEST TIMES EVER, even though many had been racing for more than five years. By comparison, the control group of runners who continued their regular training program made no improvements.

Dr. Bangsbo's research explained why intense interval training improves athletic performance. When a muscles contract, potassium is pumped out of cells. Intense exercise strengthens the sodium/potassium pump in cell membranes which increases the speed of potassium re-entry into the cell. This speeds recovery rate and increases the strength capability of the muscles.

These days virtually everyone is stressed for time and many people struggle to find time to work regular exercise into their busy lives. If you typically use lack-of-time as your excuse for not exercising, the study I’m reporting on today annihilates your excuse(s).

Over the past decade, numerous studies have touted the benefits of high intensity interval training: greater benefits in less time. However, many of these studies have had some shortcomings (usually due to funding limitations) such as short duration, lack of control group, or only measuring a few fitness benefits. Consequently, some people have still questioned whether or not short bursts of high intensity exercise are superior to traditional endurance training.

Recently Martin Gibala, Ph.D. and his colleagues at McMaster University in Canada organized and conducted an extremely well designed study that compared the benefits of very short, very intense workouts with traditional moderately intense endurance workouts such as long runs or bike rides.

THE OUTCOME

Benefits From 1-Minute of Intense Exercise Equals 45-Minutes Of Moderate Exercise. Expressed another way, during the 12-week trial, the high-intensity interval cyclists rode their bikes for a total of 6 hours with only 36 minutes at high intensity compared to 27 hours of riding for the moderate intensity endurance cyclists.

STUDY DESIGN

25 out-of-shape young men were recruited and randomly divided into three groups. The control group made no change in their non-exercising lifestyles. The second group began a traditional endurance-workout routine, which consisted of riding a stationary bicycle at a moderate pace in the exercise lab for 45 minutes, with a two-minute warm-up and three-minute cool down.

The third group engaged in interval training, using the shortest workout ever designed to document the benefits of short-duration high-intensity interval exercise. The high-intensity cyclists warmed up for two minutes on stationary bicycles, then pedaled as hard and fast as possible for 20 seconds, followed by a slow pace for two minutes. This cycle was repeated two more times; 20 seconds of all-out sprinting followed by 2 minutes of slow-riding recovery. At the end, they continued peddling slowly for a 3 minute cool-down. The entire workout lasted 10 minutes, with only one minute of that time being intense all-out exertion.

Michael Holick, MD, Phd, who is one of the world's leading vitamin D researchers, has written a book titled The Vitamin D Solution. I highly recommend this book. The information about vitamin D is so important and so compelling that most people who read it are motivated to take action.

Dr. Holick made the following important statement, "Vitamin D is not only the most common nutritional deficiency in the world, but it is also the most common medical condition, affecting at least one billion people." An excerpt from Dr. Holick's book appeared in the September 2010 issue of the Life Extension Magazine.

Vitamin D is made in our body when natural sunlight strikes our skin. But, most people do not get enough sun exposure. That's why I encourage people to take a daily vitamin D supplement. I recommend that adults take 5,000 IU of vitamin D daily. Since vitamin D is a fat-soluble nutrient, it should be taken at the largest meal of the day to enhance absorption.

Vitamin D was discovered in 1922 when it was found to prevent rickets in dogs. Because it was the fourth vitamin to be discovered (after vitamins A, B and C) it was named vitamin D. For over half a century, scientists thought vitamin D’s only function was to enhance calcium absorption and help prevent bone diseases like rickets and osteoporosis.

More recently, scientists have discovered that virtually all cells in the body have vitamin D receptors. In addition to bone health, we now know that optimal vitamin D levels are important for the prevention of heart disease, cancer, depression, cognitive decline and dementia. Also, vitamin D is one of the most critical factors for a healthy immune system and healthy pregnancies.

Vitamin D’s importance for a strong immune system has lead scientists to the realization that the annual increase in winter colds and flu is basically a vitamin D deficiency disease. Our primary source of vitamin D is direct exposure of sunlight on our skin. In the winter months, the sun’s rays are less direct and cold temperatures cause people to stay indoors more and wear clothing that prevents sunlight striking the skin.

What is the “optimal” vitamin D level? The accepted method of determining vitamin D is to measure blood levels of 25 hydroxy vitamin D. Many laboratories list 30 ng/ml (nanograms per milliliter) and above as being optimal but I think this is wrong. The world’s leading vitamin D researchers uniformly agree that optimal vitamin D levels should be between 50-70 ng/ml. The only way to really know your vitamin D status is to get yourself tested. However, my general recommendation for adults is 5,000 IU/day.

Deficient: Below 50 ng/ml

Optimal: 50-70 ng/ml

Treating Cancers & Heart Disease: 70-100 ng/ml

Did you know there are two forms of vitamin D? Vitamin D2, which is synthetic, is not the form of vitamin D that is produced in the body. Vitamin D3 is natural vitamin D, which is identical to the vitamin D our body makes. Many physicians write prescriptions which instruct patients to take 50,000 IU of vitamin D2 once weekly. However, I think it is better to take the active D3 at a dose of 5,000 IU once daily.

According to a recent study, vitamin D3 is much better absorbed, making it approximately 87% more effective in raising and maintaining blood levels of vitamin D. Vitamin D3 also stays in the body 2 to 3 times longer than an equivalent amount of vitamin D2.

Unfortunately, many people do not consume enough vitamin C to realize its vast array of health benefits. Most adults incorrectly assume that the government recommended RDA of 75-90 mg of vitamin C is an optimal daily dose. This RDA or “recommended dietary allowance” is only enough to prevent vitamin-deficiency disease states such as scurvy—but not nearly enough to provide optimal support for your immune system.

Nobel prize-winning scientist Dr. Linus Pauling was among the first to recognize the importance of high-dose vitamin C supplementation more than 30 years ago. Since then, scientists have amassed impressive evidence supporting the numerous benefits of high-dose vitamin C.

Vitamin C has anti-viral activity in the body, so it helps protect against winter colds and the flu. Based on these findings, I believe it is vital that young children also receive appropriate supplementation with vitamin C.

I recommend that adults take 1,000 mg of vitamin C two or three times daily. For children I recommend from 250 mg to 500 mg of vitamin C two or three times daily.

Omega-3 fish oils are the most serious and most common nutritional deficiency in America (possibly tied with vitamin D deficiency). And, the discovery of omega-3 fish oils has been called the greatest nutritional discovery since vitamins. I want to summarize the health benefits of omega-3 fish oils and tell the story of how they were discovered.

In 1968 a Danish medical doctor named Jorn Dyerberg learned that Greenland Eskimos or Inuits as they are called today, had very low rates of heart disease. This puzzled Dr. Dyerberg because these Eskimos consumed one of the highest fat-content diets in the world. Their diet consisted mainly of meat and blubber from seals, whales and walrus. And, this was at a time when rates of cardiovascular disease rates were skyrocketing and high-fat diets were thought to be the major cause of heart disease.

Dr. Dyerberg organized a team of scientists and went to Greenland to try and learn why a group of people who consumed an extremely high-fat diet had rates of heart disease that was about 1/10th the rate of U.S. heart disease. Dyerberg's team discovered that although the Eskimos consumed an enormous amount of fat, it was the type of dietary fat that made the difference. The Greenland Eskimo diet contained very high amounts of what are now called the omega-3 fish oils.

The names of the primary omega-3 fish oils (also called marine lipids) are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These fats are part of every cell wall and cellular membrane throughout the body and they participate in and regulate a vast amount of biochemistry in our bodies.

How's this for omega-3 fish oil benefits: Reduce your risk of dying from sudden death by 45% and reduce your risk of sudden cardiac death by 90%. Lower your risk of developing Alzheimer's disease by 50%(3). EPA and DHA are powerful anti-inflammatory agents, they lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of blood clots, have anti-depressant action and they play critical roles in regulating our immune system.

Quality is important when it comes to fish oil products. The fish oils are unstable, so they can easily oxidize and become rancid during processing. Also, toxins in the ocean accumulate in the fish. Hence, the extraction and processing of fish oils must be done carefully. Two brands that I trust and recommend are Nordic Naturals and the Life Extension Foundation. I recommend that adults take from 2 to 4 grams of EPA and DHA daily. Kids should take omega-3 fish oils supplements too and Nordic Naturals has lemon-flavored fish oil supplements that kids love.

Coffee drinkers....you are going to love this post. In addition to caffeine, coffee contains over 1,000 biologically active compounds such as polyphenols and antioxidants. Numerous recently published scientific studies are reporting that regular coffee consumption of provides a wide range of health benefits. In this post I am going to review some of these recent studies reporting the health benefits of coffee.

Coffee Consumption Reduces Risk of Death

A stunning epidemiological study recently reported that regular coffee drinkers had significantly lower risks of death compared to non-coffee drinkers. This study tracked over 229,000 men and 173,000 women between the ages of 50-71. The subjects were followed for 13 years, from 1995 to 2008. Overall, this represented an evaluation of 5.15 million person-years, which makes it a very powerful study. Among non-smokers, regular coffee drinkers had fewer deaths from heart disease, respiratory disease, stroke, diabetes, infections, injuries and accidents.

Compared to non-coffee drinkers, the reduction in the risk of dying from any cause for coffee drinkers was the following:

Risk of Dying: Men Women

Drinking 1 cup/day -6% -5%

Drinking 2-3 cups/day -10% -13%

Drinking 4-5 cups/day -12% -16%

Drinking 6 or more cup/day -10% -15%

Coffee Provides Cardiovascular Protection

Newer studies are totally reversing previous studies that suggested coffee consumption might cause or aggravate cardiovascular disease. A large meta-analysis of over 1.2 million people evaluated people's cardiovascular disease risk measured against their coffee consumption. Compared to non-coffee drinkers, individuals who drank an average of 1.5 cups/day had 11% reduction in their risk for cardiovascular disease while individuals who consumed an average of 3.5 cups/day had an overall 15% reduction in cardiovascular risk.

Endothelial dysfunction is one of the primary causes of high blood pressure and overall cardiovascular disease risk. The endothelium is thin layer of cells that line the blood vessels. Endothelial cells produce nitric oxide and other biochemical signals which regulate the blood vessel's ability to relax and dilate or to constrict and contract. Thus, the endothelium regulates blood pressure and blood flow throughout the body.

One of the problems I have with prescription drug blood pressure medications is that they do lower blood pressure, but they DO NOTHING to correct the underlying endothelial dysfunction. Thus, blood pressure-lowering medications give a false sense of security because they treat the symptoms while allowing the underlying problem to continue to worsen.

In a study with elderly adults, regular consumption of boiled caffeinated coffee resulted in a 49% improvement in endothelial function. Although the polyphenols in coffee are known to have cardiovascular benefits, one study reported that ingestion of 200 mg of caffeine (equivalent to about 2.5 cups of coffee) provided 160% improvement in endothelial function in patients with coronary artery disease and 121% improvement in endothelial function in healthy individuals.

Decaffeinated coffee has also been shown to improve endothelial function. In one study, one hour after consumption of 2 cups of decaffeinated Italian espresso coffee, endothelial function improved by 46% while endothelial function improved 23% one hour after consuming 1 cup of the same Italian espresso coffee. Since this study used decaffeinated coffee, it confirms that compounds other than caffeine in coffee are also responsible for producing positive benefits to endothelial function.

Coffee Protects Against Metabolic Syndrome & Type 2 Diabetes

Metabolic Syndrome and diabetes are health disasters of epidemic proportions. Metabolic syndrome encompasses abdominal obesity, hypertension, abnormal blood lipids, and insulin resistance resulting in elevated blood sugar levels. The incidence of metabolic syndrome and type II diabetes continue to escalate at an alarming rate along with corresponding risks for heart disease, cognitive decline and some forms of cancer.

Recent studies indicate that coffee regular coffee consumption helps reduce the risks of developing both metabolic syndrome and diabetes. Results from a study in Japan, where the rate of metabolic syndrome has been rising dramatically, revealed that metabolic syndrome developed less frequently in coffee drinkers compared to non-coffee drinkers.

Other studies show similar protective effects against metabolic syndrome. For example, an epidemiological study published in 2013 reported that individuals drinking from 1.5 to nearly 3 cups of coffee per day had a 49% reduction in the risk of developing high blood sugar.

The results of animal studies help explain how coffee helps protect against metabolic syndrome. In one study, rats were fed a high fat/high sugar diet. They rapidly developed metabolic syndrome which led to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and damage to their hearts. However, when some of these rats were also supplemented with coffee extract, the unhealthy effects of their “bad” diet were dramatically reduced and their blood sugar and blood pressure improved.

In another study, mice fed a high-fat diet rapidly increased abdominal fat deposits and gained weight. However, when mice were fed the same diet supplemented with coffee (either decaf or regular) they had lower fat stores and lower body weight. Coffee also reduced markers of inflammation and the incidence of liver damage.

Both Caffeinated And Decaf Coffee Protect Against Diabetes: The results of a 2014 meta-analysis involving over one million individuals reported that both types of coffee protect against type II diabetes. Compared with little or no coffee consumption, individuals drinking from 1 to 6 cups of caffeinated or decaf coffee daily had reduced risk of developing type II diabetes of 8, 15, 21, 25, 29 and 33%.

In another million-person meta-analysis, individuals consuming the largest amount of regular coffee had a 29% reduced risk of developing type II diabetes while the largest consumers of decaffeinated coffee had a reduced risk of 21%. This study also revealed that for each additional two cups/day, diabetes risk was reduced by 12% in regular coffee drinkers and 11% reduced risk in decaf drinkers.

Coffee Also Protects Your Brain: Studies indicate that higher consumption of caffeine reduced the risk of developing both Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Also, in people with mild cognitive decline, those consuming higher levels of caffeine have a slower rate of progression into full-blown dementia.

Animal studies show that coffee and caffeine help prevent Alzheimer’s-like cognitive decline and also reduce the accumulation of a protein in the brain called Abeta which is associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

Caffeine has also been shown to elevate levels of a specific growth factor called granulocyte-colong stimulating factor of GCSF which is associated with improved memory. GCSF is thought to stimulate the formation of new brain cells and new synaptic connections between brain cells.

Beyond Caffeine: While coffee is known to contain over 1,000 bioactive compounds, studies reveal that a compound named chlorogenic acid is one of coffee’s most important health-promoting compounds. Chlorogenic acid provides powerful anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. This translates into reduced cardiovascular risks for congestive heart failure, strokes and heart attacks. Chlorogenic acid has also been shown to provide improved blood sugar regulation, improved memory, reduction in diabetic neuropathy, and enhanced rates of wound healing.

Coffee--To Drink or Not To Drink: Coffee is not for everyone. For some people, coffee produces heart-burn or gastric irritation. It can also produce jitterieness or anxiety and for some people it causes sleep problems. It is always important to monitor yourself. Individuals who experience negative effects from coffee should minimize or avoid it. And yes, coffee and caffeine can be addictive. Withdrawal symptoms can include headaches, fatigue, irritability and depression.

Some studies report negative effects of coffee consumption such as slightly elevated levels of homocysteine, insulin resistance, cholesterol and blood pressure. However, my purpose in writing this article was to summarize the significant and growing body of scientific literature which indicate that caffeine and other compounds in coffee produce substantial health benefits.

<![CDATA[Squats For Weight Loss]]> /blog?post_id=45&title=squats-for-weight-loss /blog?post_id=45 Squats (sometimes called Air Squats) are an amazingly simple, safe, inexpensive, effective form of exercise. Air squats are simply squats done without additional weights, just using one's own body weight for resistance. The video below demonstrates the correct form doing squats.

They can be done by people of all ages and in virtually any location. I currently have an 82-year old female client who is doing her squats holding onto the door knobs on her bedroom door for balance.

Air squats utilize all the big muscles in your lower body including the quadriceps, hamstrings, adductors and the gluteal muscles in the buttocks. Strengthening these muscles will provide a lifetime of benefit. This is especially important for the elderly because strength in these muscles helps prevent falls and subsequent injuries.

There is another benefit from air squats that gets overlooked. Squats are a great weight-loss technique. I encourage my clients who want to lose weight to do 20 or 30 air squats about 10 minutes before each meal. Activating all the muscles in the legs and buttocks delivers more blood, oxygen and nutrients to all these cells. Then after eating, much more of the blood sugar from a meal gets delivered to these big muscles where it gets utilized for energy rather than getting converted to triglycerides and stored as fat. Yes, just doing squats for a couple of minutes before a meal will help you avoid storing the calories from a meal as body fat.

It is now estimated that 11% of Americans are taking antidepressants (over 30 million) and millions more are taking benzodiazepines for anxiety. These drugs have serious side effects, are very addictive, and in most cases are inappropriate therapy. I am passionate about wanting to inform people about safe natural therapies for depression and anxiety.

Here is one of the controversies in psychiatry that I discuss in this course. In 2008, an investigative report was published in the New England Journal of Medicine which shockingly revealed that the FDA & pharmaceutical companies LIE to physicians and the general public by overstating the benefits and minimizing or ignoring side effects of antidepressant drugs.

Between 1987 and 2004, there were 74 clinical trials on antidepressant drugs registered with the FDA. It turns out that 49% of these trials had negative outcomes and a large percentage of these negative trials were not published (hidden) so that physicians and the general public would not become aware of them. Even more disturbing was the revelation that some antidepressant drug trials that had negative results were published in a way that "spun" their outcomes to appear positive.
